GOOSEBERRY PIE is a tale of disappointment told in three bittersweet acts. A young girl visiting her grandmother spends the afternoon picking gooseberries, inspired by the delicious promise of dessert. She watches, rapt, as Nana transforms a simple bucket of berries into pastry perfection, then slides this work of art into the oven. Nana’s house fills with a mouth-watering fragrance and as the girl sits down at last with a warm slice of pie, she is dismayed to discover she’s been duped—after working and waiting all afternoon, the fruits of her efforts are an unexpectedly sour prize.
Humor as wry as gooseberries balances the enduring theme of our dreams not always being what they seem.
